In hunting around for another quilt pattern to work on, I came across the Urban Cottage Quilt Pattern by Moda Fabrics. I originally decided to make a fall quilt following this pattern, which I’ll probably get to work on once this is done. But my brother’s birthday is coming up in October and I figured he would enjoy having a quilt.
I had to go to a Michael’s to buy the fabric for this quilt and it was honestly not the worst. I hate that craft stores are slowly becoming “stuff stores”. IMHO, a contributing factor to the demise of Joann (outside of private equity and corporate greed) is because they had too many premade products there that would have been fun for crafters to make. Sell the kits to make the throw pillows and wooden signs and wreaths. Host classes and knit nights and meet-ups. Instead it’s a ton of plastic nonsense and premade items. Joann could have made a killing selling kits to make all the tchotchkes instead of just selling the tchotchkes. But now it’s gone and there’s a giant hole in the industry and a serious lack of access for crafters across the US. And yeah, I’m a huge fan of shopping small and local. But I’m not using heirloom quality handspun wool for a baby blanket. I think there is a time and a place for everything. I also think that these hobby can be really cost prohibitive, and for others in the community to look down their nose on folks who can’t afford to buy sweater quantities of LYS wool is just plain shitty. Shop and support local if you can, but shop where you can afford to stay engaged in the hobby.
ANYWAYS, I went to Michael’s for the fabric. They had one small aisle of quilting cotton, and probably 4 small aisles of fabric in general. They did have the Caron Anniversary Cakes while I was there so I snagged a few of those. Once I finish my Moonlit Magic throw, I think I might start working on something with the Anniversary Cakes.
My brother has been going thru it this year, and he lives far away. I am hoping that having a quilt from his sister will be kinda like having a hug. I’ve got 3/4 of the quilt top done.
My son has been teething this week and it’s been difficult to get much time to myself. My husband was on overnights so I was the primary parent for most of the day while he slept. The baby has been taking short naps and been pretty clingy, so it has been hard to find time to do much of anything except the bare minimum. The tooth is FINALLY through, so hopefully next week will be better and I’ll have more time to craft.
